The Field Of Dreams

Rare opportunities like the Field of Dreams surface perhaps once in a detectorist's lifetime. Initially perceived as a mere abandoned sporting field, deeper conversations with local figures unveiled its rich colonial history dating back to 1820. Once a thriving center of industry and agriculture, circumstances led to a gradual decline in population over the next 150 years.

After securing permission from the landowner, we eagerly traveled 4 1/2 hours to the location, ready to unearth the secrets hidden beneath the overgrown grass. Despite the challenging tussocks hindering our metal detector swings, we persevered.

Initially discovering brass eyelets from old canvas sheets, the site's past as a campground and short-stay / lay over spot became apparent. While brass eyelets continued to surface, our excitement soared with the first appearance of copper half pennies, confirming our research. The exceptional condition of these coins, owing to unique soil conditions, added to the thrill of the find.

As our exploration deepened, a cache of silver coins emerged, spanning from the 1950s back to 1910, each in remarkable condition. Subsequent trips to different areas within the field revealed distinct sets of coins, including Victorian silver sixpences and threepences. Among the earliest finds were an 1816 and an 1817 Bullhead shillings.

In total, our haul exceeded 100 pre-decimal coins, with the promise of more awaiting discovery. The Field of Dreams continues to unravel its historical treasures, inviting us to uncover the stories embedded in its soil.
